Dr. Sanjay Upadhyay is a board-certified family medicine physician with over 15 years of experience. After graduating with a degree in anthropology from NYU and having no idea what he wanted to do, he joined the Peace Corps for a couple years and failed at farming in Niger, West Africa. He did learn how to connect with different people from different backgrounds and also came to appreciate the relationship between access to good quality health care and health outcomes. After traveling around the world for another six months, he completed a pre-medical post-baccalaureate program at NYU and then earned his medical degree from St. George's School of Medicine in Grenada. He completed his family medicine internship and residency at Tufts in Boston and then returned to New York to earn his Masters in Public Health from Columbia University.

Prior to joining Summit Health (formerly Westmed Medical Group), Dr. Upadhyay had mostly worked at Federally Qualified Health Centers and was most recently the medical director of the department of family medicine at Morris Heights Health Center in Bronx, NY. He also spent a few years working with Temple Physicians, serving the Fishtown community in Philadelphia. He is interested in health systems and research which support shared medical decision-making with patients. He is an active member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Sanjay believes that happiness is what we all strive for and what brings us joy is unique to each individual. Making choices which support a healthy body and mind are essential to living a long, happy and meaningful life. With that in mind, he strives to actively listen to each individual to discover their goals and then discuss options to achieve them through a plan which makes sense while incorporating patient-oriented evidence-based research to optimize positive outcomes. When not at work, happiness to Dr. Sanjay is spending time with his wife and two children, music, exercising, traveling, seeing concerts, trying new foods, anything that gives him a good laugh and, when there's time, reading a good book.
