Gerard D’Onofrio, MD, specializes in the nonoperative treatment of sports and spine injuries. He focuses on identifying a root cause diagnosis and performs an extensive physical examination to guide treatment. Dr. D’Onofrio provides conservative treatments such as personalized physical therapy programs, guided injections, and minimally invasive procedures to help achieve pain relief and maximize function.

He uses musculoskeletal ultrasound for real-time imaging and diagnosis of tendon, muscle, ligament, and joint disorders as well as to guide injections of corticosteroid, anesthetic, gel supplementation, and platelet rich plasma. He uses live x-ray technology, known as fluoroscopy, to guide procedures in the lower back and neck regions for conditions such as herniated discs, spine arthritis, and stenosis. Dr. D’Onofrio served as chief resident of the New York-Presbyterian, Columbia and Cornell residency program, where he authored several book chapters and pioneered a novel care program in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thereafter, he practiced at the Hospital for Special Surgery and was Assistant Team Physician for the New York Red Bulls and Long Island Nets professional teams. His research interests are primarily related to the role of muscle function and longevity, as well as the relationship of core muscles to athletic performance and pain. Dr. D’Onofrio has an appreciation for human performance and rehabilitation as a former athlete and personal trainer. Dr. D’Onofrio says: “I partner with my patients to devise the treatment plan most suitable to them. I enjoy maximizing their function and getting them stronger and more prepared for physical activity.”

He was raised in Chatham, New Jersey and enjoys spending time with family, exercising with kettlebells, reading, cooking, and being outdoors.
