Akanksha Kumar MD has an area of expertise in Family Medicine and is a member of Summit Health’s Family Medicine team. Dr. Kumar practices full spectrum, comprehensive medical care, seeing patients ages 12 and older. Her focus is to understand her patients and their stories/context in which they live. She wants to be at the center of patients’ healthcare journey and help them coordinate care with specialists if needed.

Dr. Kumar’s special interests include taking a well-rounded approach to patient care and focusing on wellness in patients’ everyday lives, whether it be mental health, diet/exercise and other lifestyle choices. She has additional training in reproductive health and contraceptive care – IUD's, implants, preconception counseling, and an interest in postpartum maternal mental health. In addition, she provides joint injections for arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.

“My philosophy when it comes to patient care is to meet my patients where they are in their healthcare journey and work with them to accomplish the goals that are important to them for their health and well-being", she says. Dr. Kumar enjoys collaborating with her patients and getting to know them over time and making a connection with them. She truly enjoys the diverse population of patients she sees and the different stages of their lives that she gets to be a part. This is one of her most rewarding aspects of being in family medicine – continuity of care.

When not practicing medicine, Dr. Kumar loves to travel with family and spend time outdoors with her husband, son, and dog. She enjoys taking road trips to all the beach towns in the Northeast and exploring coffees/wines of the world. She is also passionate about making sure all children have access to food, healthcare and education. As a dog lover, she feels strongly about dog rescue and pet adoption.
