Cancer Surgery
Whenever possible, your surgical oncologist uses minimally invasive laparoscopy to evaluate and treat tumors. Usually, the goal of surgery is to remove as much of the cancerous tissue and tumors as possible without interfering with healthy functions in the body.
What is Cancer?
The term cancer applies to a group of diseases that result from the abnormal growth of cells in the body. Unlike normal cells, cancer cells can start in one place in the body and spread to other tissues. Although many of the more than 100 different kinds of cancer can be life threatening, now there are effective treatments to cure and manage cancer in some cases.
Abnormal cancer cells usually create a tumor, but in some cases such as leukemia, cancer cells circulate through the blood. Whether cancer spreads through the blood or through cell growth, the spread is a process called metastasis.
Some cancers are hereditary. Other cancers result from environmental or behavioral factors such as cigarette smoking. The cause of some cancers is still unknown.
