What is Physiatry?
Physiatry is the branch of medicine that diagnoses, treats, and manages disorders and injuries of the muscles, bones, and nerves. It is sometimes called physical medicine and rehabilitation.
What is a Physiatrist?
Physiatrists are board-certified experts who specialize in nonsurgical treatment of disabilities, including those from accidents, conditions/diseases, and surgery. Physiatrists focus on conservative treatments, including customized rehabilitation plans, selective injections, and minimally invasive procedures to achieve patients' goals.
Our physiatrists can use musculoskeletal ultrasound to help diagnose and guide steroid injections, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, and injections for joint and tendon disorders. They work with patients of all ages to develop individualized rehabilitation programs that help restore strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, coordination, and range of motion.
The goal of outpatient physiatry is to help patients become strong enough to manage activities of daily living and be independent.
In most cases, our physiatrists treat patients who are not hospitalized (outpatients); but they also can help people who are hospitalized (inpatients).
