Matthew Ryan Cohn, MD is a member of Summit Health’s Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team. Dr. Cohn specializes in the treatment of shoulder and elbow problems, ranging from young patients with sports-related injuries to senior patients with degenerative conditions. Dr. Cohn is particularly interested in treating complex problems, including arthritis with deformity, complex rotator cuff tears, failed shoulder instability surgery, and revision shoulder replacement.

Dr. Cohn attended medical school at Cornell University, where he graduated with honors in academics and research. He completed a research fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery, focusing on the study of metabolic bone diseases. He has remained an active researcher throughout his career, authoring over 80 peer-reviewed articles, four textbook chapters, and numerous national conference presentations.

Following medical school, Dr. Cohn completed residency at one of the premier training programs in the country, Rush University in Chicago. There, he gained a breadth of experience in fracture surgery, shoulder replacements, and arthroscopy, and trained with the orthopedists for the Chicago Bulls and White Sox. Dr. Cohn continued his training as a Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Fellow at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Philadelphia, learning from world experts in the field. He also traveled to the Schulthess Klinik in Zurich, Switzerland to learn how leading European surgeons approach treating patients.

Dr. Cohn begins each visit by getting to know his patients and learning how their shoulder or elbow problem affects their daily lives. “Once I understand the nature of the problem and a patient’s goals, together we can come up with a treatment plan that best fits their needs,” said Dr. Cohn. “Typically we first explore nonoperative treatments and reserve surgery for when these options aren’t successful,” he adds.

Outside of work, Dr. Cohn enjoys traveling, snowboarding, and spending time with family.
