Mommy Makeover
Overview
Having children is a wonderful experience, but it can permanently change your appearance. Some of the effects that you may notice after childbirth and breastfeeding are:
- Sagging breast tissue
- Stretch marks on the breasts, stomach, and hips
- A bulging stomach
- Stretched, loosened rectus muscles of the abdomen (aka diastasis recti)
- Thicker hips and thighs
Few women can regain their pre-pregnancy shape through diet and exercise alone. The reason is that even though they can lose weight by exercise and good nutrition, the stretched skin and loosened muscles rarely completely return to their pre-pregnancy condition. Mommy makeover surgery can restore your body to its youthful appearance. The plastic surgeons at Summit Health offer a variety of cosmetic procedures to improve your body after pregnancy:
- Breast augmentation
- Breast lift
- Breast lift with implants
- Breast reduction
- Liposuction
- Tummy tuck
- Labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation
- Lower body and buttock lift
- Inner thigh lift
“I did a lot of research before having my plastic surgery. Dr. Hyans came highly recommended. I had a breast lift and tummy tuck. He did an amazing job, far surpassing my expectations. I feel so much more confident with my body now. He changed my life. Dr. Hyans and his staff treated me with respect and gave me wonderful care. I would highly recommend Dr. Hyans to anyone interested in cosmetic surgery.”

Combining procedures is less costly and often allows you to have only one episode of anesthesia, as well as only one recovery period. Depending on the procedures you want, however, some may require 2 or more surgeries. This is done to avoid operations over 6 hours when possible. If a patient’s desired procedures last well over 6 hours, we will often break them down into two separate surgery days, a few weeks or a few months apart, to allow safer healing. Of course, whenever medically possible, we do the surgeries of your choice the same day.
Some women also like to include non-surgical treatments in their mommy makeover, such as Botox, dermal fillers, skin resurfacing, or Ultherapy.
We have a protocol that helps you manage post-operative pain and recover more quickly. When necessary, we also include blood thinners to prevent blood clots, OnQ pain pumps to reduce pain, and Exparel, a long-acting advanced local anesthetic. As a result, you might even be able to leave the surgery center for home the same day or the next day after your mommy makeover surgeries.
Mommy Makeover Procedure
When you meet with us for your mommy makeover consultation, we will have an honest discussion about your goals, expectations, and concerns, as well as the limits and risks of the procedures. We will review your medical history and do a thorough check of your health to make sure you are a good candidate for a mommy makeover. We then recommend options that can best help you achieve your goals. We will give you thorough written instructions to prepare for your surgery and will answer any questions you have.
At Summit Health, the patient experience is of primary importance to us. We customize every single procedure we do so that it is tailored to what is best for you and you alone.
While these are the most common procedures done in a mommy makeover, any procedure that we offer at Summit Medical Group has the potential to be a part of your surgical plan.
Breast Augmentation. This procedure involves the insertion of implants to make the breasts larger. The surgery can lift slightly sagging breasts and correct loss of breast volume that often happens after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Breast enhancement used to be very painful during the first few days of recovery. At Summit Medical Group, we have developed a set of protocols to limit the pain and discomfort from this procedure. These protocols involve providing medications before, during, and after the surgery, as well as optimizing our patient care. We also use nerve block techniques to numb the area of the operation before we even start it. Read more about breast augmentation.
Breast Lift. Pregnancy, nursing, and the effects of age and gravity can cause breasts to lose volume, sag, and change shape. A breast lift (or mastopexy) raises and reshapes sagging breasts to make them firmer and perkier. If your breasts are asymmetrical, do not match, or are misshapen, a breast lift may also be able to reshape them for a more pleasing appearance.
Typical home tests to determine if you are a candidate for a breast lift include placing a pencil underneath your breast to see if it remains in place when you stop holding it with your hand. If your nipples point downward, you are also probably a candidate for a breast lift. We also have protocols in place to reduce the pain of a breast lift. We recommend that women who plan to get pregnant again postpone breast lift surgery, however. Read more about breast lift.
Breast Lift with Implants. This surgery is for women who wish to correct sagging breasts and also increase breast size. The goal of a breast lift and breast enlargement combination is to create fuller, firmer, natural-looking breasts that will increase your self-confidence and help your clothes fit better.
This surgery was very painful in the past during the first few days of recovery. At Summit Medical Group, we have developed a set of protocols for pain control. These protocols involve providing medications before, during, and after the surgery, as we also optimize our patient care. As a result, most of our patients tell us that they only require some pain medication for a few days. Read more about breast lift with implants.
Breast Reduction. Large, heavy breasts can cause back, shoulder, and neck pain. They can also cause bra straps to dig into the shoulders and create posture issues that affect the entire spine. Large breasts inhibit physical activities and make it difficult to find clothes that fit properly. Many women with this condition feel self-conscious. Breast reduction surgery reduces the size of the breasts, as well as reshapes and lifts them, relieving the pain that the weight of the breasts has caused. It is so effective at treating back and neck pain that it has the highest satisfaction rate of all plastic surgery procedures.
Breast reduction is actually three operations in one. The total size of the breast is reduced, the size of the areola is also reduced in order to match the smaller breast size, and a breast lift is included as part of the procedure. There is no need to ask for a breast lift with your breast reduction because the lift is simply part of the reduction procedure. Breast shape and asymmetries can also usually be improved during this treatment. Read more about breast reduction.
Liposuction. Liposuction contouring (or lipoplasty) is the most common cosmetic procedure in the United States. It is surgery that removes unwanted fat from specific areas, improving the contours of your body. The most frequently treated areas include the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, upper arms, neck, and chin. After pregnancy, many women have pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise. This is often the case in the love handle area, the belt line “pooch” or “muffin top” area, and in the “bra fat” area. Liposuction is a perfect solution to restore pre-pregnancy contours to the body.
The plastic surgeons at Summit Medical Group have extensive experience performing liposuction, and it is our philosophy to be straightforward with our patients about what the procedure can and cannot accomplish. Read more about liposuction.
Tummy Tuck. This is the most common procedure requested as part of a mommy makeover. Pregnancy often stretches the abdominal muscles (causing a 4-month pregnant look forever), and a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can correct this condition, restoring a flat appearance to the stomach. Some women may also have lax skin in this area, which needs to be excised, and some women may have excess fat that needs to be removed through liposuction. If necessary, a tummy tuck can include tightening of the abdominal muscles, excision of excess skin, and liposuction of fat deposits. Read more about tummy tuck.
Labiaplasty and Vaginal Rejuvenation. The inner labia can become stretched, enlarged, or uneven as a result of childbirth, or even naturally with time, causing discomfort and problems with hygiene. Genital labial reduction (or labiaplasty) is a type of vaginal plastic surgery that can eliminate these and other problems caused by enlarged or lengthened labia. The tissue around the clitoris (so-called “hood”) can also be stretched and become excessive in some cases, and this can be addressed as well. The procedure can restore a more youthful and symmetrical appearance. Read more about genital labial reduction.
Lower Body and Buttock Lift. Pregnancy can cause the skin on the abdomen, waist, back, buttocks, and thighs to sag. One of the most dramatic and fastest-growing plastic surgery procedures is a combination lower body lift and buttock lift to sculpt the stomach, remove love handles, and contour the waist, hips, thighs, and buttocks. This procedure is often combined with a tummy tuck and liposuction. Read more about lower body and buttock lift.
Inner Thigh Lift. Pregnancy can have an impact on the thighs, causing excess fat and loose skin that refuse to respond to diet and exercise. A thigh lift can reduce and contour not just the inner thighs, but also the outer thighs, restoring your upper legs to a trimmer, smoother, more youthful shape. Read more about inner thigh lift.
We will provide you with full instructions regarding your recovery and post-operative visits. You will take advantage of our advanced pain protocol, as well as our scar regimen to ensure that you heal comfortably and beautifully.
The length of your recovery period will depend on the specific set of surgeries that you have chosen for your mommy makeover.
“I went to Dr. Momeni's office for a consultation because I wanted to get rid of my baby fat. My twins did a lot of damage, and I had to have my abdomen reconstructed. He also found a belly button hernia (I always thought every mom gets an outie after giving birth). Well, the surgery was life-changing. I used to walk around and look like I was 5 months pregnant. Now, my baby fat is gone, the scar is healing up OK. (I wish there was a way to get a tummy tuck without the scar, but I can hide it in my bikini line). My tummy is flat, and I've started to replace my old wardrobe with clothes that fit better and look better. The office is very nice, it's very low-pressure, and the staff (especially Dr. Momeni's nurse, Mary) is kind and comforting. Highly recommend this office.”
