About Alexis Johnson-Maxim, APN
Alexis Johnson-Maxim, APN, is a member of Summit Health’s Pulmonology team. Mrs. Maxim has been interested in the health care field since she was a child. Her mother worked in health care for many years and instilled in her daughter the value of taking care of others. Mrs. Maxim developed a passion for pulmonary and sleep medicine during her experience as a critical care nurse. She loves establishing connections with her patients and having a positive impact on their lives.
Specializing in the care of adult and geriatric patients with pulmonary and sleep disorders, she treats chronic conditions such as sleep apnea, COPD, and asthma as well as acute conditions including COVID-19 and pneumonia. Prior to joining Summit Health, Mrs. Maxim practiced pulmonary, sleep, and critical care medicine throughout northern New Jersey. Mrs. Maxim has been actively involved in patient care, training advanced practice nurses and practice improvement. Her research has focused on improving outcomes in patients with COVID-19.
“My philosophy is based on patient empowerment,” she says. “Patients know their bodies, and my role is to provide them with evidence-based treatment options so they can be empowered to make informed decisions regarding their care.” Her goal is to help patients achieve wellness and optimal quality of life through a collaborative approach to care.
During an office visit, Mrs. Maxim says it is important to listen to patients and build a connection based on trust. She believes that the relationship between a patient and provider is special, and it is important that they work as a team to create a plan of care that best fits the patient.
Mrs. Maxim enjoys getting to know patients and their families during each visit. She loves hearing about what is happening in their lives and what makes them genuinely happy.
Outside of treating patients in the office, Mrs. Maxim enjoys spending time with her husband, children, and cats. She also has a passion for music, the arts, and trying new foods from diverse cultures. When it comes to the community, she believes strongly in improving patient outcomes by addressing health disparities that exist due to socioeconomic status. She is also passionate about improving health literacy through patient education and outreach.
