Body Contouring After Massive Weight Loss
Overview
People who have lost a significant amount of weight or have had bariatric surgery for weight loss are the fastest growing group of plastic surgery patients. Significant weight loss can cause skin to sag severely, which can lead to rashes, infections, and hygiene issues.
If you have had weight loss surgery (such as gastric bypass, gastric band, or sleeve gastrectomy), or if you have lost a lot of weight through diet and exercise, remaining loose skin may make you feel self-conscious. Body contouring procedures can tighten and reduce the extra skin on your neck, arms, chest, breasts, abdomen, back, thighs, and buttocks, giving you a more normal appearance.
These procedures include:
- Liposuction
- Tummy tuck
- Arm lift
- Thigh lift
- Lower body and buttock lift
- Body lift (or belt lipectomy)
- Neck lift
- Breast lift
- Breast lift with implants
- Breast reduction
At Summit Health, we have worked with many patients after massive weight loss to restore their bodies to a firmer and more normal appearance. Combining procedures is less costly and often allows you to have fewer incidents of anesthesia and fewer recovery periods. Depending on the procedures needed, however, some patients may require 2 or more surgeries. This is done to avoid operations over 6 hours when possible. If a patient’s desired procedures last well over 6 hours, we will often break them down into two separate surgery days, a few weeks or a few months apart, to allow safer healing. Of course, whenever medically possible, we do the surgeries of your choice the same day.
We have a protocol that helps you manage post-operative pain and recover more quickly. When necessary, we also often use blood thinners to prevent blood clots, OnQ pain pumps to reduce pain, and Exparel, a long-acting advanced local anesthetic. As a result, some patients can even leave the surgery center for home the same day or the next day after body contouring surgeries.
